CBS Sports released a new list of trade targets and trade destinations and Tampa Bay made the list.

In a brand-new list by Cody Benjamin, via CBS Sports, the Tampa Bay Bucs have been named a potential trade destination for a veteran backup quarterback.

The Bucs have played two preseason games thus far. Tampa’s yet put their starting offense on the field for game action and the team’s backup quarterbacks have been less than stellar. While Benjamin suggests the Bucs would be in the market for Taylor Heinicke, a deal would seem less than probable. Tampa Bay, as an organization, has not indicated that backup quarterback is a position of need in their minds. Additionally, Heinicke is a member of the Atlanta Falcons which doesn’t make a deal impossible but does muddy the waters.

Through Tampa’s 2024 preseason action, neither of the Bucs’ backup passers has been top-tier. Each has played a heavy dose of snaps— Kyle Trask is 24 of 39 for 252 yards, with one touchdown, and an interception to match it. John Wolford has attempted 32 passes and completed 19 of them. On those 19 completions he’s accumulated 183 yards. Wolford has yet to throw an interception, however, he hasn’t tossed a touchdown either.

No matter the likelihood, Heinicke would be a fairly significant upgrade over Trask and Wolford. Though he has not lit up the Falcons’ preseason (12/27, 0TD, 0INT), Heinicke has been a starting quarterback in the NFL and is one with some postseason experience— Heinicke was arguably the quarterback who gave Tampa Bay the most trouble during their 2020 playoff run as a member of the Washington Football Team. Against the eventual Super Bowl champion Bucs, Heinicke would throw for over 300 yards, a touchdown pass, and add another score with his legs.

Should Tampa Bay take a close look at their depth at the quarterback position? There is an argument to be made.

Is Taylor Heinicke a likely option? Probably not.
