It’s not particularly shocking as Gregory, 31, has been absent from all team activities since signing a one-year deal worth $3 million, more than half of which was guaranteed, back in April. Not much mind was paid for skipping voluntary workouts, but many eyebrows raised when he logged three unexcused absences for mandatory mini camp in June.
Gregory wasn’t expected to be a huge player for the Bucs on defense, as they instead look to rely on younger options like YaYa Diaby, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, and 2024 second-rounder Chris Braswell, among other options. Nevertheless, a unit can always benefit from more pass-rushing options, and Gregory produced well enough for the San Francisco 49ers in a limited role last season (11 pressures, 2.5 sacks in 12 games with zero starts).
Gregory’s placement on the reserve list means he will not count toward the Bucs’ 90-man preseason roster nor the team’s salary cap. He will also accrue mandatory fines of $50,000 for every day missed, plus a chunk of salary for every preseason game missed.
If he reports or not, it seems likely a resolution will come sooner rather than later — whether that comes via his actual attendance or as a cut, that remains to be seen.
