According to Rick Stroud, the plan for Todd Bowles was always to start K.J. Britt against Packers

The plot thickens.

There were reports prior to the Tampa Bay Bucs’ game against the Green Bay Packers that Devin White was going to be inactive and it was “not injury related” then there was a report that White told head coach Todd Bowles that even though he practiced all week, his foot wasn’t good enough to play and he needed to sit.

Now, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports that even if Devin White was able to play, he was going to do so from the bench and the Bucs were going to start K.J. Britt instead, citing that the Bucs haven’t been thrilled with White’s attitude lately;

Todd Bowles talked to the media about it after the game and didn’t seem too thrilled at the situation;

This seems like a classic case of “you can’t fire me, I quit” from White. The Bucs’ plan was to start Britt and that likely rubbed White the wrong way and he decided if he wasn’t going to start, he wasn’t going to play.

The drama with White dates back to his trade request in the off-season and now it seems that all of the bad blood is coming to a head. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Bucs finish the season with White being inactive the rest of the way before parting ways as White prepares to hit free agency.

This is certainly an ongoing and developing situation, but one worth keeping an eye on. The Bucs sit now at 7-7, atop the NFC South and very much in the playoff picture – and it may be best to stick with the player that’s producing and not being a distraction on or off the field – and let’s be honest, K.J. Britt has earned that job.
