Tampa Bay’s head coach is irked yet pleased with certain things in training camp so far.
Each summer, it’s hard to set true expectations for teams across NFL training camps. Especially when there are players constantly filtering and out as well as coaches in several instances — like the Bucs.
But training camp is best utilized to recognize flaws and fix issues ahead of the regular season or even the preseason. And well over a week into camp for Tampa Bay, head coach Todd Bowles has already identified several things that stand out to him the most.
“The penalties are a work in progress. We’ve got to get that taken care of. After being in camp for a week, you’ve got to get used to the pads, you’ve got to get used to the heat and then you’ve got to carry out your assignment. That’s a work in progress,” Bowles said. “I’m really pleased with the mental approach these guys have come in with. We haven’t had any sloppy days. We’ve had mental errors, but we haven’t had any sloppy days. Guys are locked in and they’re trying to get better.”
Fortunately, is good there haven’t been sloppy days as Bowles pointed out. Aside from the usual dropped passes or missed tackles, the Bucs have had some solid days in camp.
The penalties though are the problems that give coaches the biggest headaches and give teams the biggest problems once the games matter.
There’s still time to figure it all out. The regular season is still roughly a month away. But if they don’t start correcting it now, we’ve seen how penalties have plagued the Bucs in crucial situations in the past during the regular season.
